Šaltupės chapel stood in the northern part of the Zarasai town, near Šaltupės street. The chapel was built in 1824 by Antanas Zarenbergas. It was made of brick, plastered and painted white. At the top, under a roof, there was a small arched opening, where a statue of Christ stood. People considered this statue being magical. There are different stories about how did the chapel appeared. The story goes that one stormy day lightning struck the church, and it was knocked down into the lake. The miraculous statue of the Christ that stood next to the church come up to the surface of the water. In that place near the Šaltupės stream parishioners built a stone chapel, where they placed this statue. Another reason for the chapel to appear could be the Šaltupės stream, the water of which according the locals is healing. On 10 of July 1960 Zarasai district government allowed Father A. Juška to finish Šaltupės chapel and fence it with a stone fence. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. On the 1st of July 1965 Zarasai town workers' deputy council adopted a decision to demolish the chapel located in the M. Melnikaitė street due to street reconstruction. At the night of 29 th of December the chapel was blown up. In 1992 under the care of Father V. Kapočius the chapel was rebuilt.
