A blindage is a battlefield hiding place to protect yourself from powerful fire strikes. All hideouts were built according to a typical scheme, only the sizes of the barrels differed. Buildings were usually adapted to the terrain and dug into the hill or ditches. Blindage is a type of a fortification.
Fortification structures are separate, but independent structures connected to trenches with increased resistance to fire. They can be active and passive. Passive buildings are not designed for active defense. This is the main form of fortification , providing conditions for protecting soldiers and ammunition from destruction by artillery fire. Passive structures are hiding places for temporary shelter of soldiers, shelters, command posts of battalions and regiments, ammunition storage, toilets, wells, etc. Command posts differ from hiding places intended for soldiers by observation posts (domes), they were equipped with several rooms. Active structures usually have observation and firing openings - embrasures. They can be used for frontal, curling trajectory and flanking fire.
