From ornithological point of view the most important are the following bodies of water: the Avilys, Čičirys, Drūkščiai, Luodis, Samavas, Smalvas, Šventas, Vencavas and Zarasas. District lakes and rivers protected species growing at 5 and 2 kinds of rare plants. There are currently leased over 60 local water bodies that carry out commercial fishing. Recreational fishing leased over 40 lakes.
